A Consistent Calculation of Bubble-Nucleation Rates

چکیده
We present a consistent picture of tunnelling in field theory. Our results apply both to high-temperature field theories in four dimensions and to zero-temperature threedimensional ones. Our approach is based on the notion of a coarse-grained potential Uk that incorporates the effect of fluctuations with characteristic momenta above a given scale k. Uk is non-convex and becomes equal to the convex effective potential for k → 0. We demonstrate that a consistent calculation of the nucleation rate must be performed at non-zero values of k, larger than the typical scale of the saddlepoint configuration that dominates tunnelling. The nucleation rate is exponentially suppressed by the action Sk of this saddle point. The pre-exponential factor Ak, which includes the fluctuation determinant around the saddle-point configuration, is well-defined and finite. Both Sk and Ak are k-dependent, but this dependence cancels in the expression for the nucleation rate. This picture breaks down in the limit of very weakly first-order phase transitions, for which the pre-exponential factor compensates the exponential suppression.

A consistent approach to bubble-nucleation theory
We summarize recent work on the consistent calculation of bubble-nucleation rates. Our approach is based on the notion of a real coarse-grained potential. The bubble-nucleation rate is calculated through an expansion around the semiclassical saddle point associated with tunnelling. We resolve outstanding problems related to the convexity of the potential, the double-counting of the effect of fl...
متن کاملA kinetic theory of homogeneous bubble nucleation
We present a kinetic theory of homogeneous bubble nucleation based on explicit calculation of the single-molecule evaporation and condensation rates as a function of the size of the vapor embryo. The surface condensation rate is calculated from the kinetic theory of gases, and the surface evaporation rate is related to the rate of escape of molecules from a potential well in the field establish...
متن کاملBubble-Nucleation Rates for Radiatively Induced First-Order Phase Transitions
We present a consistent calculation of bubble-nucleation rates in theories of two scalar fields. Our approach is based on the notion of a coarse-grained free energy that incorporates the effects of fluctuations with momenta above a given scale k. We establish the reliability of the method for a variety of two-scalar models and confirm the conclusions of previous studies in one-field theories: L...
متن کاملAvailability Analysis For Heterogeneous Nucleation In A Uniform Electric Field
Industrial demands for more compact heat exchangers are a motivation to find new technology features. Electrohydrodynamics (EHD) is introduced as a promising phenomenon for heat transfer enhancement mechanisms. Similar to any new technology, EHD has not been understood completely yet and requires more fundamental studies. In boiling phase change phenomena, nucleation is the dominant mechanism i...
متن کاملThe Role of Fermions in Bubble Nucleation
We present a study of the role of fermions in the decay of metastable states of a scalar field via bubble nucleation. We analyze both one and threedimensional systems by using a gradient expansion for the calculation of the fermionic determinant. The results of the one-dimensional case are compared to the exact results of previous work.
